Before birth
Choose a lactation-friendly birthing place and share your feeding plans with your provider.
Pack: nursing bras/tanks, nipple cream, breast pads, comfy clothes.
Learn nursing positions: cradle, cross-cradle, football, side-lying.
See a lactation consultant prenatally if possible.
Arrange postpartum support (partner, family, friends, groups).
Stock soft snacks and water.
Prepare a feeding tracker or notebook.
First 24–48 hours
Aim for immediate skin-to-skin.
Try to breastfeed within the first hour.
Watch for feeding cues: rooting, hand-to-mouth, stirring (crying = late cue).
Expect frequent feeds (about 8–12+ per 24 hours).
Check latch: wide mouth, flanged lips, no clicking; should feel tugging, not pinching.
Output: at least 1 wet diaper in the first 24 hours; stools should transition to yellow, seedy.
